About Dr. Popat

22 Years of Expertise in Endocrinology

I am one of the few physicians in the country who has extensive experience treating Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), a rare condition that affects many women but is often misunderstood or overlooked. My unique combination of clinical expertise, research background, and systems thinking allows me to provide comprehensive care that addresses the whole person.

I have been a faculty in the NIH Board Review Course on Endocrinology and have given talks on female endocrinology since 2008. My approach combines evidence-based medicine with the six pillars of lifestyle medicine to help patients achieve optimal hormonal health and overall well-being.

At the FDA, I supervised cutting-edge Stem Cell and Gene Therapies, giving me a unique perspective on the future of medicine while remaining grounded in practical, patient-centered care. Vital Endocrinology provides virtual endocrine care for Maryland patients seeking POI expertise, hormone therapy, and thoughtful second opinions.

Understanding Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Primary Ovarian Insufficiency occurs when the ovaries stop functioning normally before age 40. Unlike menopause, women with POI may still have intermittent ovarian function and periods. This condition affects approximately 3-4% of women and can lead to various health concerns including infertility, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular issues if not properly managed.

Key Points:

  • Affects approximately 3-4 in 100 women under 40
  • Different from premature menopause - ovarian function may fluctuate
  • Requires specialized hormone management for bone and heart health
  • Pregnancy may still be possible with proper treatment
  • Long-term health monitoring is essential

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Hormone Replacement Therapy involves supplementing the body with hormones that are no longer being produced adequately. For women with POI or menopause, this typically includes estrogen and often progesterone. Modern HRT is tailored to each individual's needs, symptoms, and health profile.

Benefits of HRT:

  • Relief from hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes
  • Protection against bone loss and osteoporosis
  • Cardiovascular health support when started early
  • Improved sleep quality and cognitive function
  • Better quality of life and well-being

Investment in Your Health

Payment Information

Why I Don't Accept Insurance

I have made the deliberate choice not to accept insurance so I can provide you with the highest quality care without the limitations and administrative burdens that insurance companies impose. This allows me to:

  • More Time With Your Doctor: Without the constraints of insurance, I can spend the time needed to truly understand your health and provide comprehensive care.
  • No Insurance Limitations: I can recommend the best tests and treatments for you, not just what insurance approves.
  • Transparent Pricing: You know exactly what you're paying upfront. No surprise bills or hidden costs.

Superbill for Reimbursement

After each visit, I will provide you with a detailed superbill (itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

How it works:

  1. 1Pay for your visit at the time of service
  2. 2Receive a superbill with all necessary billing codes
  3. 3Submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement
  4. 4Receive reimbursement directly from your insurer

Single Case Exception

Because very few physicians have expertise in Primary Ovarian Insufficiency, the chances are high that your insurance company will approve a Single Case Exception.

What this means:

  • Your insurance may cover my services at in-network rates
  • I can provide documentation of my specialized expertise
  • We can help you navigate the request process
  • Many patients have successfully obtained exceptions
